Preproduction Rational

What is your project about?

My project is about concept art, in this project I will be creating a variety of different designs for characters, vehicles, equipment, scenery assets and area art. For this project I will need to create a plot line to base the concept art on. The plot line will be a simple short idea “in the year 3002 the world being constantly attacked by extraterrestrials so due to this the united governments of earth have started a project called Zelta. Project Zelta is an army of genetically engineered soldiers specially designed to match the extraterrestrials at there own game. With full authority to do what’s necessary to protect the plant and a arsenal of heavy weapons, aerial support and vehicles at there disposal the Zelta army is the earths best defense agents the alien threat”. So using this small plot story I will develop a series of illustration and design work.

Although the majority of the design work will be of my own I will need to do research into existing futuristic and present day based games and movies related to the story blot such as the Halo series, Gears of War, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Call of duty modern war fair, Aliens Vs Predator, Independents day, star wars, Avatar and Chronicles of Riddick. But I will mainly need to research different styles of concept art weather its official art related to a game or movie or unofficial art created for a portfolio. And from looking at the different styles of concept art I will hopefully develop a new style witch I could then apply to the production part of the project. The main style of concept art Iv noticed it always rough and sketchy and is worked on more than once to create depth and detail this will be one of the first styles I shall try out in my project.

Why have you chosen to do this project?

I have chosen to do this project for a couple of reasons one of them being is because I feel that since my drawing skills are my strongest skills that I have I’ll be able to perform well in this chosen area. I enjoy being creative and coming up with my own ideas and designs for characters and such. I have also chosen this subject so that in doing the research and studying the different styles that are used in concept art I could then improve my own style in general. Another reason why I chosen this subject is to develop a greater understanding of the role a concept artist has with in a creative team.

I enjoy viewing different designs, illustrations and digital paintings form a game or movie showing the progression of a character, creature or vehicle design all the way to its finalized concept and from there producing promotional art featuring that character or creature witch is usually on the cover of the DVD or game case.  But it would be something interesting for me to see in my own work the progression of a concept idea weather it’s a character or a vehicle design.


How will you manage your work?

I’ll first start with acquiring research on some official, unofficial concept art works to study the different styles of work. Form there on paper I will do several sketches of character, vehicles, equipment, scenery assets and area art form the base story I came up with. These sketches will then be taken further and worked on more to either fine tune the sketch or to come up with a different idea. After I have a decent number of finished sketches say about six or seven I shall then scan them and take them into Photoshop or coral painter (witch will be a new program for me to work with) and start coming up with various color schemes, mostly for the characters and vehicles and other assets. After the color schemes have been finalized I will then take the sketch work and produces detailed illustrations witch will then be taken into Photoshop or coral painter and will be digitally painted using a Wacom graphics tablet. And if it is possible I shall try and have all the illustration work done in the project printed of and made into a art book witch may require me making a cover with I’m fine with doing but again only if its possible.

Who will be the target audience?

The content of this project I’ll be working on will be targeted at creative groups like online gallery and portfolio hosting sites such as Deviant Art.com and Conceptart.org. But the main target audience for this project are game companies like Sony entertainment, splash damage, I.D software, Capcom and so on. I chose the game industry as my main target audience because at some point I would like to present my portfolio to any of theses companies not just in hopes of a placement but also in hopes of getting a professional opinion about the work that’s in the portfolio and perhaps offer surjection’s as to what kind of work some companies are looking for around that time. I could also target the film industry as an audience as well as they to use concept artists to help develop their ideas. But the film industry is larger and more difficult to contact due to the roles being very specific.

Property rights.

The majority of the work I’ll be producing in this project will be of my own planning and design there may be elements in the project that have been used before in a film or game but that will mostly be there to help further the Ideas I have in the works. The program I’ll be using the majority of the time, Adobe Photoshop cs3 witch is copy righted to Adobe inc. The other program I may be using in this project coral painter is copy righted to Coral Corporation. The hard ware I’ll be using to produce the digital painting with a Bamboo Wacom tablet is copy righter to Wacom Inc.
